Our

The 2019 Positive Farmers Conference is a special event. Not only does it mark the 20th year of the Positive Farmers Conference but it also affords us the opportunity to look back over the lessons from 2018 and to plan ahead for the future. The opening session will feature well known dairy researcher Dr. John Roche give a detailed talk about how future environmental regulations may impact on pasture based dairy farming. John will explain the impact greenhouse gas emissions and deteriorating air and water quality is likely to have on agriculture. He will also outline the mitigation strategies dairy farmers can implement to limit their exposure to new regulations if and when they are enforced. The second part of this session will look back over the challenges of 2018 and what lessons were learned. A very wet and cold spring and a very dry and hot summer led to severe reductions in grass growth resulting in widespread winter feed shortages. Jack Kennedy from the Irish Farmers Journal will outline the lessons from 2018 on the Greenfield Farm in Kilkenny. Bill O’Keeffe will outline his lessons from 2018. Bill runs multiple dairy farm units across the south and east of Ireland. Tadhg Buckley, head of agriculture at AIB Bank, will give his thoughts on the wider industry and what lessons the industry needs to take from a bad year. The second session on the first day is all about grass. First up are the Walshes. Padraig and Pat are farming at Durrow, in Co. Laois. One of the first adapters of grassland measurement in Europe, Padraig has a wealth of knowledge built up from over 25 years of measurement. Padraig’s son Pat graduated from University College Dublin in 2013 and is now managing the grass on the home farm. The father and son team grew over 20 t/ha of grass in 2017 and between them, will outline their approach to grassland management. Sticking with grass, Teagasc dairy researcher Donal Patton takes up the reins in the second half of the session. Donal is based at the Teagasc research farm in Ballyhaise, Co. Cavan. He has carried out extensive research into the ideal stocking rate for dairy farms. His talk will focus on the overall farm stocking rate. In the context of the fragmented nature of Irish agriculture, Donal will answer the question about what to do with the outside block. The third session at the conference is all about managing oneself. The organisers recognise that 2018 was a difficult year for farmers where time was stretched and stress was sometimes high. Also, in some cases, the post quota rush to expand has skewed the work/life balance in favour of work. Well known consultant Sian Bushel travels over from Wales to outline her approach to personal time management. Sian will outline areas farmers can work on to manage their working time better, to get more time off and achieve personal and family goals. This year, the conference will hear from Pat Hickey, who will outline the progress made by the Hickey family over the past 20 years. The family are originally from Freshford in Co Kilkenny but are now farming in Laois, Westmeath and Roscommon as well as the original farm in Kilkenny. Pat made the first move in 2006 by buying a 255 acre farm in Westmeath. A second farm in Roscommon was purchased in 2013 and extra farms have been purchased and leased by the family over the years. Pat will outline the story, the lessons learned, what went well and what they would do differently and how they manage the various farm businesses. Second day outline to follow shortly

As an organisation we are watchful of both domestic and world developments and how it affects inside the farm gate. With our large network of trusted contacts worldwide - industry leaders, advisors and top performing dairy farmers, we take great care to formulate programmes that address the current and future needs of dairy farmers.  We consistently provide materials & speakers to improve skills in key areas, grow awareness of opportunities and risk and greatly improve profits and efficiency on farm. Every year we strive to raise the bar for dairy farming and in 2018, we want to  seize every opportunity. From engaging and helping to lead the industry, to strengthening ties with farming organisations that share quality information. We also strive to make dairy farmers more aware of how the global markets function, what factors drive them and how this influences the price we get for our milk. Our recent tour of The Mid West United States will help greatly in understanding this sleeping giant which is now the second largest exporter of milk in the world.
